Visiting string quartets have been regular guests in Celebrity Series concerts over the past several years, and many of the groups are new discoveries for Boston audiences.

This Thursday, the Celebrity Series will host the Doric String Quartet in the ensemble’s belated Boston debut. The British group burst onto the European scene over ten years ago after racking up awards from the Osaka International Chamber Music Competition and International String Quartet Competition. When the quartet made its American premiere in 2010, listeners and critics acclaimed the group’s pristine and silvery ensemble sound.

The Doric Quartet first made their mark with music of Benjamin Britten, and will perform their compatriot’s Quartet No. 3, alongside Haydn’s Quartet in E flat, Op. 64, no. 6, and Mendelssohn’s Quartet in F minor, Op. 80.

The performance will take place 8 p.m. Thursday at Pickman Hall. celebrityseries.org; 627-482-6661
