Charles Ives kept one eye to the past and the other to the future. His music, with its quotes of marches, hymns, patriotic songs, and fiddle tunes, recalls a simpler America. Yet his harmonies anticipate, by about half a century, the tone clusters and brash dissonances that would come to characterize the European and American avant-garde.
This week violinist Stefan Jackiw and pianist Jeremy Denk will team up to perform Ives’ four Violin Sonatas in a Celebrity Series recital. And to explore the music in greater depth, the vocal ensemble Hudson Shad will render the hymns and songs that Ives quotes in these works.
The performance will take place 8 pm. Friday at Jordan Hall. celebrityseries.org; 617- 482-6661
