Odyssey Opera has examined the writings of Oscar Wilde through performances of rare and curious works this season, including Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s The Importance of Being Earnest last month.

Friday night at Jordan Hall, Gil Rose and company will offer another rare treat in Alexander von Zemlinsky’s Der Zwerg (The Dwarf). Based on Wilde’s fairy tale “The Birthday of the Infanta,” the opera tells the story of a dwarf who falls in love with a princess. The results, without spoiling the plot, are heartbreaking.

Friday’s concert performance will feature Aleš Briscein in the title role alongside Kirsten Chambers as Donna Clara, James Johnson as Don Estoban, and Michelle Trainor as Ghita.

Der Zwerg will be performed 7:30 Friday at Jordan Hall. odysseyopera.org.
