Fleming, Pollini and Tilson Thomas on tap in Celebrity Series’ 2014-15 season
Renée Fleming will perform a recital February 8 in the Celebrity Series’ 76th season.
For their 76th season, the Celebrity Series of Boston will host a starry lineup of performers in 2014-15, which includes new and familiar names in performances of new and familiar music.
Renée Fleming will return to Symphony Hall for a solo vocal recital February 8. Other singers next season will include mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter, accompanied by pianist Angela Hewitt, in songs by Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Fauré, and Debussy on January 23. And tenor Joseph Calleja will appear in recital on April 17.
The Celebrity Series will host the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra on November 7 at Symphony Hall. Riccardo Chailly will conduct the ensemble in Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture and the “Reformation” Symphony as well as Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, with and Nikolaj Znaider as soloist.
At Symphony Hall on November 16, Michael Tilson Thomas leads the San Francisco Symphony in Liszt’s Mephisto Waltz No.1, Ravel’s second Daphnis et Chloé suite, Samuel Carl Adams’ Drift and Providence, and Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto, featuring violinist Gil Shaham.
The Mahler Chamber Orchestra will make its Boston debut on February 22 at Jordan Hall in a concert billed as “The Beethoven Journey.” Pianist and conductor Leif Ove Andsnes will perform and lead the composer’s Second, Third, and Fourth Piano Concertos. And Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble will perform a concert celebrating their fifteenth anniversary March 4.
The season will open October 5 with Italian pianist Maurizio Pollini in a recital of works by Schumann and Chopin at Symphony Hall.
Other pianists will include Daniil Trifonov, who will make his Celebrity Series return in a performance next spring (March 13), and Stephen Hough the following May. Richard Goode will perform all-Beethoven program this November.
Two pianists will make their Boston debut later this year. Vadym Kholodenko, the 2013 Van Cliburn gold medalist, will perform October 29 at Pickman Hall, and Inon Barnatan will offer a recital on December 10 at the same location.
Barnatan will return on May 1 for a concert with cellist Alisa Weilerstein, featuring music by Bach, Schubert, Prokofiev, and a new work by Joseph Hallman.
Next winter and spring will feature a host of other string-piano duos. Violinist Janine Jansen and pianist Itamar Golan will perform works by Beethoven, Ravel, and Prokofiev February 6. Violinist Lisa Batiashvili and pianist Paul Lewis will team up for a program of Bach, Beethoven, and Schubert March 29.
Other duos, string quartets, and ensembles in the lineup will feature a mix of old and new music.
MacArthur Fellows Chris Thile (mandolin) and Edgar Meyer (double bass) will perform a genre-bending program of original music October 12 at Sanders Theatre.
The Juilliard String Quartet, featuring new members Joseph Lin (violin) and Roger Tapping (viola), will offer a program of Webern, Berg, and Schubert at Jordan Hall on October 18.
The Emerson String Quartet, with new cellist Paul Watkins, will kick off the new year’s classical offerings with a program of Purcell, Beethoven, and the premiere of Lowell Liebermann’s String Quartet, a Celebrity Series co-commission, on January 22 at Jordan Hall.
On February 20 at Jordan Hall, the Calder Quartet will give the Boston premiere of Andrew Norman’s Sabina on a program that includes Thomas Adès’ Arcadiana, Ravel’s String Quartet, and Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 11 in F minor.
The Simón Bolivar String Quartet, comprising principal players from the Simón Bolivar Symphony Orchestra, will make its Boston debut with music by Mendelssohn, Brahms, and Ginastera November 19 at Pickman Hall.
The Dublin Guitar Quartet will also make their Boston debut at the same location on April 8 with a modernist program of Tavener, Brouwer, Ligeti, and Pärt.
On April 22, Trio Jean Paul will present a concert of chamber music by Beethoven, Rihm, and Dvořák.
Violinist Itzhak Perlman will perform a solo recital at Symphony Hall this November. And Sanders Theatre will host organist Cameron Carpenter in a Boston debut recital on March 5.
The 2014-2015 season will also feature a strong lineup of popular and jazz artists, including Rosanne Cash (November 13), Broadway songstress Audra McDonald (March 1), and saxophonist Branford Marsalis and his ensemble (January 29). Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock will team up for a duo performance next April 12 at Symphony Hall.
Rob Kapilow and Voices Boston will perform Britten’s A Ceremony of Carols as part of the “What Makes It Great?” series December 5 at Jordan Hall. Next April, Kapilow will explore the music of Duke Ellington with the big band Kyle Athayde Dance Party.
In other dance events, the Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet will make their Boston debut May 2015 at the Shubert Theatre, and the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater will return for another annual performance at Wang Theatre March 26-29.
