Sir András Schiff performed a recital last season that consisted of Bach’s Goldberg Variations and Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations. The Hungarian-born pianist returns to Boston Friday night with an equally gargantuan program that will feature the final piano sonatas of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert, an event presented by the Celebrity Series.
Last works are not always final thoughts of a life in music, yet these pieces in a genre close to the hearts of these composers do invite questions as to what they would have achieved if they had took the time, or lived long enough in the case of Mozart and Schubert, to have written more. Schiff, a pianist of polished technique and sensitive musicality, will pose those questions with what promises to be a bold and enriching performance.
