This week, Thomas Adès returns to town to lead the Boston Symphony Orchestra in the world premiere of his Concerto for Piano and Orchestra–the culminating achievement of his artistic partnership with the ensemble, which has been extended through the 2020-21 season.

Though it contains no overt program, the concerto, according to interviews with the composer, reflects the fruitful artistic relationship between Adès and pianist Kirill Gerstein, who will serve as soloist.

To fill out the program, Adès will lead the orchestra in Liszt’s Mephisto Waltz No. 1 and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4.

Performances will take place 8 p.m. Thursday and Saturday and 1:30 p.m. Friday at Symphony Hall. bso.org
