The 76th season of the Tanglewood Festival will offer the return of Bernard Haitink, Bryn Terfel in Wagner, the American premiere of an opera by George Benjamin and a double bill of operas by Purcell and Britten.

After a five-year absence, Bernard Haitink returns to the Berkshires for two programs. The Dutch conductor will lead the Boston Symphony Orchestra in Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 on August 17 and the BSO’s final summer program of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony August 25.

On July 20, Bryn Terfel will sing the role of Wotan in a complete performance of Act 3 of Wagner’s Die Walküre. Lothar Koenigs will conduct a cast that also features Katarina Dalayman and Amber Wagner. Terfel will also present a recital at Ozawa Hall July 18 with pianist Natalia Katyukova.

George Benjamin will conduct the U.S. premiere of his opera, Written on Skin, in a concert performance August 12 as part of the Festival of Contemporary Music. And the Mark Morris Dance Group will team up with Tanglewood Music Center Fellows July 31 and August 1 in fully staged performances of two one-act operas, Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas and Britten’s Curlew River. There will also be a concert performance of John Harbison’s The Great Gatsby presented by Emmanuel Music on July 11.

Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos will lead the BSO and mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter, in Mahler’s epic Symphony No. 3 on July 6. And Christoph von Dohnányi will direct two programs, featuring Brahms’s Second and Third symphonies on August 9 and 10.

Many Tanglewood favorites will return including Lang Lang (Beethoven First Concerto on August 3), Joshua Bell (Tchaikovsky, July 5), and Lynn Harrell (Haydn, July 14). Yo-Yo Ma will perform Dvorak’s Cello Concerto on August 4 and encore his “Goat Rodeo” band on August 11.
